She woke again with a cry, her hand throbbing and stabbing with pain. Darkness, relieved by flickering firelight and candles, was all around. One of the candles came nearer. She felt gentle hands, and heard a soothing kind voice. She was lifted up and a cup held to her lips. Greedily she swallowed the warm milk, not noticing the sweet, thick taste of pain-easing herbs. Almost before she was laid down again onto the soft pillow, she was asleep.
